Monthly Project: January

Make an Illustrated Recipe

Our first project of the year is one I definitely think is achievable by all. Choose your favorite recipe (I’ll also provide some ideas!) and create an illustrated recipe. With this project, you will be able to complete multiple small illustrations, learn about composition and layout, and work with text and lettering.

The best part is that you can choose a recipe to suit your current skill artistic level: for beginners, a recipe with only three ingredients would be perfect, while a recipe with many ingredients and steps will be a more involved project with many illustrations, great if you are looking for a challenge.

Here’s What to Do

For this project, choose any recipe you want! Below are some ideas if you need a jumping-off point, but what you choose is entirely up to you.

Recipe Ideas

a meal: pizza, a sandwich, a salad
dessert: cookies, ice cream sundae, banana bread
soup: chicken noodle, minestrone, tomato
a beverage: a smoothie, a cocktail, lemonade, hot cocoa

Get sentimental and illustrate an old family recipe! Think of what a great gift that would make for a loved one!

Let’s Break it Down!

Once you have decided on a recipe, head over to my article How to Illustrate a Recipe and get all the instruction you need to complete this project. The idea is to break this project into manageable portions. Here’s the step-by-step I recommend:

Step-by-Step

  1. Choose a recipe and list out the ingredients
  2. Check out some inspiration
  3. Determine what elements you will include and make a layout sketch
  4. Make a rough sketch of the imagery
  5. Work on illustrating the ingredients one at a time
  6. Illustrate lettering and add text
  7. Final details!

I go into detail on each of these steps in my Illustrated Recipe article, so let it be your guide!
