Week Seven

I’ve noticed in the community lots of you pushing yourselves outside of your comfort zone. That is amazing! Drawing animals is a challenge indeed, especially when you haven’t done much of it in the past. I know this may be a difficult undertaking for you, but every attempt has value and every struggle has something to teach you.

If you are struggling this week, try not to be dismissive and say, “Well, I just don’t like drawing zebras.” Persist, and understand that all your attempts to draw something difficult will make you a better artist. Even if (especially if) they don’t lead to a polished finished piece. They will teach you something new. A new way to approach a drawing, a new way to draw a shape, a new way to convey a visual idea, or insight about your artistic preferences. Every attempt is valuable.

What to Do

  • Use a lot of references to understand the animal. Lots of quick sketches are super beneficial to the progression of your skills. If your final drawing for the day is nothing more than a page of sketches, give yourself a high five.
