Week 42: Signs of the Zodiac

Studying the stars in the sky is as ancient as it gets, and mythology surrounding constellations has been around just as long. While I’ve never been one to read seriously into a horoscope, I do think they make very striking symbols and would make beautiful illustrations. These prompts can be drawn as the literal words they are or as the symbols of constellations on which they are based. Need some inspiration? Here’s a Pinterest search to inspire you.

Since these are all connected images, it might be fun to explore drawing them with a cohesive style the whole week, like a limited color palette or a particular art style.

And obviously, a week is only 7 days long, and there are 12 signs of the zodiac, so feel free to swap any of these out if there are once you’d prefer to draw.

I drew the Taurus as my example art below, using techniques from my recent brush-making tutorial!

You can check out my layers for this piece below. I drew the background using the Nebula brush (built-in Procreate brush from the Luminance set) and the stars using the brushes we make in the tutorial. I drew the lines between the stars using the Light Pen brush (also in the Luminance set). I set that layer set to the Add blend mode. I drew the bull using brushes from my Gouache Paintbox and set that layer’s blend mode to Add as well. The bull details used a Clipping Mask and the Multiply blend mode. The result is this cool, glowing effect!
