Week Thirty

What happens when you don’t get enough done? You didn’t work hard enough today. You aren’t exercising enough. You don’t focus enough on your family. You aren’t making enough money. You didn’t spend enough time with your friends this month. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY.

Hang on a second…

What does “enough” even MEAN?

It’s something I’ve been grappling with this week. “Enough” is an enigma. We think there is some level of “enough,” and that once we reach it, we’ll finally be fulfilled, and we can take it easy. Reality is, “enough” is a moving target and its definition is different for everyone.

This week I’ve been realizing how much I need to define “enough” for myself. I’m the kind of person that (for better or for worse) places a lot of my self-value on productivity. This makes it really easy for me to overwork myself or be very hard on myself when I don’t get “enough” done. These past few weeks, developing and producing People Skills, have caused me to take pretty poor care of myself and not be there for my family in the way I’d like to be. Sleep is important people! I am SO proud of the work I have done, but it can come at a cost…

Anyway, I’m still figuring this whole “enough” thing out, but I think it would be helpful to start out each day with a clear (and realistic!!!) definition of what that day’s “enough” looks like. And then stopping once I get there, or having grace with myself when I don’t.

What to Do

  • This week, think about your goals, — in art, in life, or anything — and try to picture what “enough” looks like for you. Maybe it’s keeping up with a positive habit, maybe it’s working regularly towards achieving a big dream of yours.
  • Recognize when you feel like things aren’t “enough”. If you’re feeling that way, maybe you need to make adjustments in your life or your definition of “enough” needs tweaking.
  • One more (very important) thing. YOU. ARE. ENOUGH. You are a light in this world just by being in it, and your worth is not determined by your accomplishments.

July Prompts

People

That all being said, I have slowed down production of the People Skill tutorials because, well, I need to. This lady needed a BREAK. Be sure you are always taking care of yourself, regardless of whatever self-imposed deadline or project you’ve got on your plate. The tutorials are still coming, I’m hoping to get them all done in the next few weeks, and keep building on the series as time goes on. I really love how empowered you are all feeling because of them! In the meantime, I’ve made some Pinterest Boards full of inspiration and additional resources to help you with the daily prompts. You can find links to the boards on the People Skills page, and as always, links to reference photos at Making Art Everyday.
