What was your favorite toy as a child? This week we’re going to relive the fun of playing with kid’s toys. It’s our last week of our Play Time theme so remember to loosen up and have fun while you’re creating. Not every piece of art must be a masterpiece, but every art practice eventually leads to one.
You can access each weeks prompts with quick links to reference photos at makingarteverday.com.
If you only draw one piece this week,
I created this rocking horse pattern using techniques I teach in my How To Make Repeating Patterns in Procreate tutorial. In this video, I’ll teach you how repeating patterns work and tips and tricks to make patterns quickly and easily.
This rocking horse illustration is actually the design I created for a rocking horse I made for my daughter.
After drawing the design in Procreate, I made a foam board model. Using Adobe Illustrator, I created the final pieces to scale, printed them out, and traced them onto wood.
My dad and I built the rocking horse together in my grandpa’s woodshop. Then I stained and painted it according to the design I’d made in Procreate.
My kids love rocking on this horse, and I love how it turned out. It will be a family heirloom for sure!
If you only draw one piece this month, make your own greeting card design!
We’ve created a Print-at-Home Procreate template to simplify making your own greeting card. You’ll get 6 custom Procreate canvases that take the stress out of making cards. No measuring, no math required! This will allow you to focus on the fun part of creating a greeting card; illustrating!
Learn this easy technique on how to draw and shade surfaces so that they look like metal. Follow along as we draw a cute robot in Procreate.
This week’s features artist is Meg Ro from @megrodesign. She illustrated the casita from Encanto using brushes from the Gouache Paintbox set.
“After watching Encanto, I fell in love with how playful and expressive this film is. I especially loved how Casa Madrigal had its own personality. I love the bright colors and Colombian influences.”

These illustration brushes feature loads of randomized texture to give the effect of real gouache paint on a brush. Brushes have built-in inconsistencies, resulting in a very natural, hand-painted look.
