Week twenty

I am SO excited for this week: we are dedicating the whole week to making repeating patterns! I have wanted to make a tutorial about how to make patterns in Procreate for SO LONG! I’ve been making patterns for a looooong time, and every time I get that perfect repeat, it feels a little magical.

Patterns are not only much easier than you might think to create, but they are useful in so many real-world applications. You can use patterns to design your own fabric, print on apparel, home decor items, and much, much more.

I have created some helpful tools and resources to get you making your own patterns in no time:

In this video, I will teach you two ways to make seamless repeating patterns in Procreate. Follow along and draw with me as you learn how to make a simple pattern with basic shapes and a more complex pattern with multiple layers.

You can test out how your pattern looks when repeated using this handy tool! Use split-screen view with Procreate and Safari, then drag a single layer directly from Procreate onto the tester page and see your pattern repeat instantly. You can even adjust the scale to see how your pattern looks at different sizes. Find the tool quickly by going to bardotbrush.com/repeat.

This article contains the video tutorial and tester tool above, plus a ton more info about how patterns work, different repeat types, ways you can use your patterns, as well as some places you can print your patterns on fabric, apparel, products, and more.

I created Bardot Brush for people like me, people like moms, people who felt something missing after life-with-kids kicked in. Women who’s lives suddenly became incredibly complicated and busy, but still yearned for something for themselves, to fulfill themselves creatively and fill that hole. And it’s largely been mothers who have supported me and my business and I cannot even begin to express what it has meant to me, and in turn to my family. THANK YOU.

Sunday in the US is Mother’s Day so Happy Mother’s Day to all you mama superwomen out there.

Week 20: Let’s Make Patterns

This week I am encouraging you to make repeating patterns for your art-making. You can think of each prompt this week as a theme. Each day you’ll create a pattern based on that theme. You don’t even have to draw anything new! I tried to pick subject matter we’ve attempted with MAE in the past, so feel free to use old artwork to make new patterns! You are, of course, welcome to draw new artwork too. 😘

On Monday, ease into pattern making by creating something simple with basic shapes. My repeating patterns tutorial will walk you through how to make a simple pattern. Then have fun making themed patterns using our daily prompts the rest of the week! Sunday is artist’s choice, so pick any pattern theme or style you’d like.
